Fine Gael Leader Enda Kenny has expressed further disappointment that illegal dumping continues to take place throughout Co Mayo. The Mayo TD recently discovered a site where illegal dumping had taken place in the Pontoon area only metres away from Lough Cullen. He was partaking in a practice cycle to prepare for the Mayo Pink Ribbon Appeal 100km charity cycle due to take place on Saturday, May 1. He has constantly raised the issue of illegal dumping and the negative impact it has on the Irish countryside.
Deputy Kenny said: “I was extremely disappointed to discover further illegal dumping in a truly beautiful area that facilitates many tourists visiting Co Mayo in order to witness the natural beauty of the area. However, what was most alarming in this case was the close proximity of it to an important lake that makes a serious contribution to tourism and fishing in the area. It was highly irresponsible for those who carried out the act; especially if the waste contained hazardous or toxic material that could pollute the nearby lake. I have contacted Mayo County Council to inform them of the location and arrange for a clean-up of the site.”
