Planning permission is to be sought by Westport Town Council for the provision of an enterprise centre to be located in the IDA Technology and Business Park in the town.
During the monthly town council meeting, town clerk Ann Moore outlined that following the awarding of funds from Enterprise Ireland, the architects department in Castlebar is working on designs for the new centre, and planning will be applied for at the end of this month.
The Cathaoirleach of the town council, Councillor Myles Staunton, said that a lot of work has gone into this project over the past number of years, particularly through the multi-agency group, of which he is a member.
The centre, according to Cllr Staunton will help kick-start graduates for two to three years in developing their business. The one drawback according to the Cathaoirleach is that Westport is not a hub town and so needs to look differently how to attract business.
Cllr Staunton said that over the past four or five years there has been no definite interest by any business in coming to Westport, however, there have been a number of hits on the website — www.westportworks.com The Cathaoirleach said that the enterprise centre is something which the council is doing that is “constructive and proactive”. All town councillors welcomed the enterprise centre.
