Book of condolences opened in Westport

A book of condolences in commemoration of the death of the Polish president, his wife, and 95 people in a tragic plane crash last weekend, has been opened in Westport Town Council.

At Monday’s Westport Electoral meeting Councillor Margaret Adams proposed a vote of sympathy, which was seconded by Cllr Peter Flynn, and committee members were informed that a book of condolences is now open for the public to sign.

“This is a small gesture to the Polish people, particularly the Polish people living in our town, in the aftermath of this shocking and tragic news,” said Cathaoirleach of Westport Town Council Cllr Myles Staunton. “A few years ago there were estimated to be up to 800 Polish people living in Westport alone.”

Once signed, the book of condolences will be forwarded to the Polish Embassy.
