Following notification of a housing capital allocation to be received by Mayo County Council, the acting town manager of Westport Town Council Martin Keating said that the allocation will allow the Kilmeena housing scheme in the Westport area to be completed as well as progressing with rural housing applications in 2010.
Mr Keating also said that grant applications submitted for housing repairs in the Westport area will be sorted through in the coming weeks and these applications will be prioritised according to needs.
As for the query over the vacant house on the Lodge Road, Mr Keating said that a voluntary organisation will lease it for a period of five years. An organisation has not been selected yet, however the council is looking at providing a holiday facility for people with special needs, returning emigrants, or for underprivileged children.
