Defendants in hurley and hammer incident before court

A numbers of family members who were involved in a public spat on Linenhall Street with a man who they knew, on the morning of Tuesday March 23, were before Castlebar District Court this week.

Mary Maughan, 1 Rowan Drive, Castlebar, appeared before the court on Wednesday charged with the production of an article in the course of a dispute, threatening and abusive behaviour, and assault.

Philomena Maughan, with the same listed address, is also charged with criminal damage, assault, production of an article in the course of a dispute, and threatening and abusive behaviour. Terry Maughan, of the same address, is charged with assault.

Owen McDonagh, 56 An Sruthan, Castlebar, is charged with criminal damage, assault, threatening and abusive behaviour, and for the production on an article in the course of a dispute.

When McDonagh was charged by Detective Garda Declan Sweeney he said that the “hammer and hurley were pulled out from that car to beat me up”. He said that he is “very sorry to the public but if I wasn’t approached I wouldn’t have anything to do with this”, and that “they smashed up my car for no reason”.

Judge Mary Devins remanded all four defendants on continuing bail to Castlebar District Court sitting on May 5 for DPP directions and for the possibility of further charges.
