Local authority bosses have been asked to bring road networks in Mayo up to standard after the harsh winter which has left them in a “terrible state”. The call has come from the Fine Gael spokesperson on community, equality, and Gaeltacht affairs, Deputy Michael Ring, who said motorists were having their vehicles destroyed because of the potholed condition of most routes in Mayo.
“There was money allocated by the Department of Transport in relation to road repairs this year,” Dep Ring said. “I am calling on Mayo County Council to immediately start the roadworks scheme in view of the heavy rains which we experienced over the past few days which has only compounded the problem and led to further eroding of the road surfaces.
“It is outrageous the number and level of potholes in the roads. The Government brought in legislation regarding NCT and yet cars are being destroyed which is costing motorists dearly. Local authorities and the Department of Transport are leaving the roads in treacherous condition”.
“I am calling on the county manager and the county engineer to start the roadworks scheme immediately because of the condition of the roads in every part of the county. The condition of the roads is costing car owners who are already paying road tax and motor insurance,” concluded Dep Ring.
