Western Rail Corridor boost must be extended to Mayo – Carty

Welcoming the opening of the Western Rail Corridor line from Limerick to Galway, Mayo senator John Carty has called for the continuation of the project to Claremorris to proceed as soon as possible.

The WRC was officially opened by the Minister for Transport, Noel Dempsey TD this week.

Sen Carty is supporting the call from a number of bodies in the west, including the Western Development Commission, Mayo County Development Board, Mayo County Enterprise Board, Ireland West International Airport, Mayo VEC, and the Cathaoirleach of Mayo County Council, Cllr John Cribben, for the extension of the line to County Mayo.

“The Western Rail Corridor will be opened following significant Government investment as part of the Transport 21 programme. This will be the first time in 30 years that a train has operated on the line.

“This is a major step for the west and in Government’s policy of regional development and I look forward to travelling on the new train.

“Its extension to Tuam and onto Claremorris is crucial for Mayo, and I have met with the Minister for Transport Noel Dempsey TD ahead of his journey on the newly opened line, to urge him to proceed with its extension as soon as possible,” concluded Sen Carty.
