An attempt by Shell and RPS consultants to engage in dialogue with residents in the Erris area has been described as “empty and meaningless” by community group Pobal Chill Chomáin.
According to a spokesperson for the community group the offer of talks and consultation is “simply part of a box-ticking PR exercise”.
In a statement the organisation said they have already spoken to Shell at the highest level but they accused the organisation of making no effort to address the group’s concerns surrounding health, safety, and environment.
“In all their offers to ‘consult’, Shell has consistently made it clear that the Corrib project could not be altered in any way. This is consultation understood only as a conversation where they speak and we, the affected community, listen. This is not dialogue. In addition, Shell has rejected without ‘consultation’ with us all compromise proposals such as off-shore or remote shore-based processing locations,” the statement continued.
According to Pobal Chill Chomáin the project has reached an impasse and should be suspended for all sides to enter into what they term as “genuine and meaningful dialogue”.
