Art and design
Students in the art and design department are busily preparing portfolios for art colleges while also preparing for their final assessments in May. View their wonderful mural which reflects the college’s activities during the open day.
Computer studies and office management
The computer studies class have recently returned from their work experience placements which were so successful that a number of students were offered full and part time work up to and after their final examinations.
Hairdressing
The hairdressing students recently attended and competed in the Irish Hairdressing Championships at the RDS in Dublin. Zsuzanna Kazinczy and Eliza Janiszewska will be put forward for the International Hairdressing Championships in Dublin next year. The students also completed a colouring course and attended MOHH, a leading private hairdressing school in Athlone where they received an intensive training day in the latest hairdressing techniques in cutting, colouring, upstyles, waving, straightening, and hair extensions. In addition to preparing for their final FETAC exams, the Westport CFE hairdressing students are also sitting their Junior Trade Certificate exams in May, and some students are returning next year to complete the Senior Trade Certificate.
Horticulture
Spring has most certainly sprung in the horticulture department. Work experience is a mandatory part of the course, and in addition to the preparation of a horticulture plot, the students go on work placements every Wednesday to a variety of garden centres and organic growers around the county.
Motor technology
Motor technology is another new course being offered and while there is a significant theoretical element to the course, the students also get hands on experience in motor vehicle practice, auto electricity, electronics, and mechanics. Students on the course also had the opportunity to do occupational first aid, and they avail of work experience in numerous garages around the county on Tuesdays.
New courses
Westport CFE is offering courses in agriculture and rural enterprise, computer aided design, construction technology, drama and theatre studies, engineering technology, furniture design, laboratory techniques, and photography. Part-time courses in a variety of areas including preparation for work, everyday maths and budgeting, English for speakers of other languages, basic computer skills, family learning support, reading/writing/spelling skills, and driver theory test preparation are also on offer during the year.
