Get a holistic view on your body

Holistic health refers to a philosophy of medical care that considers physical, mental, and spiritual aspects of life as closely interrelated and equally important approaches to treatment. Holism, as a health concept, has existed for a very long time outside the academic circles, however it is only relatively recently that it has been integrated into the mainstream health care system.

Holism refers to the idea that an entity is greater than the sum of its parts, when it comes to health, that entity being the human body. In holistic medicine, attention must be paid to aspects such as emotional and spiritual well-being as well. The aim is to achieve wellness of the whole body, not just avoiding physical pain.

One of the terms that is often associated with holistic medicine is alternative medicine. It is frequently used by the general public and some healthcare practitioners to refer to medical techniques which are not known or accepted by the majority or conventional medical practitioners. Such techniques could include non-invasive, non-pharmaceutical techniques such as medical herbalism, acupuncture, homeopathy, reiki, and many others. However the term alternative medicine can also refer to any experimental drug or non-drug technique that is not currently accepted by conventional medical practitioners.

Alternative medicine refers to techniques that are not currently acknowledged by conventional practitioners. What is currently accepted, however, is quickly changing. Even what we understand as conventional practitioners is being rapidly revolutionised. Therefore techniques that are now considered part of alternative medicine will soon be considered part of conventional medicine. The terms holistic healing and holistic medicine are slightly more stable than alternative medicine and are therefore preferable.

Natural healing usually refers to the use of non-invasive and non-pharmaceutical techniques to help heal the patient. When most people use the term natural healing, they are usually referring to physical healing techniques only.

There are certain things you can do in order to lead a holistic lifestyle. You can start with eating the correct types of food, as what you put in to your body plays a major role in how healthy you are. Eat organic when possible — fresh fruit, vegetables, grains, and meats. Be aware of your food allergies and sensitivities so that you can avoid them.

Remember to take vitamins and/or supplements as needed. Integrate some type of exercise routine with your everyday life. Walking just 30 minutes a day can make the world of difference. It can also be yoga, swimming, or anything you enjoy doing, just as long as you move and breathe!

If you are a smoker, quit this nasty habit as you’re not doing yourself any favours. Limiting your alcohol intake is also a good idea.

It might sound trivial, but getting enough sleep at night is also a crucial element of your healthy lifestyle. A good night’s sleep will not only make you more energetic, but will also keep you alert throughout the day.

Try not to stress too much, especially not over small things that you have no control over. It won’t change anything and will only spoil your mood. Take deeps breaths and calm yourself down. Always think positive thoughts.

If your body is weak and tired, it’s a sign you need to slow down and take a break. There is no point in just getting over it and overworking as it will only lead to some kind of a disease in the long run.

You also deserve to have some time to yourself. It might be to read your favourite book, look after your garden or go to a spa, whatever works for you, try to find time for it. Don’t forget about quality time with your family and friends. We all lead such busy lives that we no longer seem to find time for simple pleasures. Try to avoid that and make sure you enjoy life.
