Big results for Mayo athletes

Athletics

The annual general meeting of Mayo AC will be held in the Beaten Path tonight, Friday March 19. The meeting will start at 8.30pm, however, Mayo AC committee members will be on hand from 8pm to collect 2010 membership subscriptions. It is important that as many members as possible attend to contribute, discuss, and decide plans for 2010, and ensure a wide range of activities is organised.

Ballina AC compete in national cross country championships

The National Senior Cross Country championships were held in the Phoenix Park last weekend and for the first time in many years Ballina Athletic Club has an athlete competing in the event. Roger Barrett who competed a few weeks previously at the intermediate championships in Boyle put in a great effort and finished mid way down the field. This was a great performance for the only athlete from Mayo to compete in the senior championships.

Ballina athletes storm Barcelona

Dublin City Marathon over 65 champion Tom Horkan ran another fantastic marathon and was ninth in his age category on this occasion. Barcelona is a truly international marathon with athletes from all over the world in attendance. Horkan’s finishing time of 3:50:13 is well inside the qualifying time in his age category for the prestigious Boston marathon. Two other Ballina athletes to complete the Barcelona event were husband and wife marathon couple, Alan and Liz Murphy. Michelle Traynor was the first of the Ballina debut marathon group home and this was testament to the preparation she put into the event. Local triathletes Mary Dunne and Orla Donnelly ran and finished together, closely followed by Finn O’Mara and Sharon Cawley.
