Westport’s The Rockies site to be cleared

To pave the way for amenity works at the historical Rockies area in Westport, clearing of the burial site will commence in the coming weeks.

Town architect Simon Wall explained to Westport town councillors at their monthly meeting that following an inspection of the area it is hard to see what is exactly there due to the large amount of bramble and bracken. Mr Wall said that the short term plan for the area is to clear this scrub before designs for its long term development will be drawn up. However, following consultation with local residents a 15-metre planting buffer will be planted at the back of the site for privacy.

Cathaoirleach of the council, Councillor Myles Staunton, said that “less is more” when it comes to developing plans for the historical and sacred site.
