Independent councillor Frank Durcan has asked to see the report from the ground testing carried out by contractors on behalf of Castlebar Town Council in relation to the new footbridge at Lough Lannagh. The councillor had asked for the report at the previous meeting of the local authority. “I met the people who were doing the ground survey by accident one day I was down there walking,” he told the meeting last week. “They were getting paid €42,000 to carry out the work here, they told me Castlebar must be awash with money to have them down from Roscommon doing this work, as two blobs of concrete would hold any bridge like they’re putting in.”
Town manager Seamus Granahan replied to the councillor, saying: “We are building the bridge to best engineering standards as we are required to. If there was a small bit of subsidence in the bridge, it would be the first thing we would hear about.” Cllr Durcan responded to the manager saying: “Any Castlebar man would tell you that it’s pure limestone there, I want to see the report.” Mr Granahan agreed to supply the councillor with a copy of the report.
