Councillors call for CCTV in Ballinrobe

Ballinrobe is need of a CCTV camera system according to a number of councillors who spoke at the monthly meeting of the Claremorris electoral area committee this week.

“One of the main reasons we would need this is that the town doesn’t have a full time Garda station,” Cllr Michael Burke told the meeting. “The system we are looking for is of course for gardaí only, it’s not a big brother kind of thing.”

Cllr Patsy O’Brien questioned what had happened with an application that was made by the local community development council to the Department of Justice for funding of a project, and called for the council to keep pushing for some funding for this project. Director of services for Mayo County Council Seamus Granahan told the meeting that the council supports the idea. “I do know that an application was made to the Department of Justice and we will follow up to see what happened with it,” he added.
