The Claremorris electoral area gave the go ahead to lease part of a green area at Station Rise in Ballyhaunis to the newly formed Ballyhaunis soccer club at its monthly meeting this week.
Ballyhaunis based councillor John Cribben proposed the motion. “The council has spent €250,000 on a large green area in this part of Ballyhaunis and it has come out wonderfully well,” he told the meeting. “Last October I was approached by members of the committee who were setting up a soccer club in the town to see would the council lease them part of the lands in this green area for the club’s use. The council readily agreed to that and this is an exciting project for Ballyhaunis. Only five years ago this area was covered in briars, horses, and goats, and now we will have the promotion of sport on this land and anything that promotes sport can only be a good thing.”
Director of services for Mayo County Council Seamus Granahan wished the club every success in the future and thanked the local community and residents who were fully supportive of the idea when approached about it.
