The Mayo County Athletics Board Awards evening was hosted recently by Mayo AC at Balla Resources centre. Six Mayo AC athletes were among many recognised for their achievements in 2009. They were Catherine Conway - senior women road racing, Kathy Connolly and Ann Murray (jointly ) - master’s women road racing, TJ McHugh - master’s men road racing o35, Breege Blehein-McHale - international achievement, and Tom Hunt - master men road racing o50.
The Barcelona marathon on Sunday was a popular choice for many from Ireland. Although Anne Fahey (Mayo AC ) suffered from flu in the week leading up to the race, she still ran a great time to finish in 4.02.57. Fahey is organiser of the Mayo AC/Fit4Life programme in conjunction with Mayo Sports Partnership which has completed a very successful first year at bases in Claremorris, Westport, Ballina, and Swinford. New members are welcome to join at the regular track sessions on Thursday evenings at 7.30pm. In the Gort 10k, Christy O'Malley finished first in the o40 section in 45.13, and Jim Donnelly ran 54.12. Ann Lennon finished an impressive 31st place in the AAI Senior inter clubs cross country championships in Dublin. Mayo AC will hold its AGM at 8pm on Friday March 19 at the Beaten Path (between Balla and Claremorris ).
