Man with ‘blatant disregard for the law’ jailed

A Lithuanian national who Judge Mary Devins said “has a blatant disregard for the law and people using the roads” was jailed and disqualified from driving for a total of six years for drink driving, careless driving, and for having no insurance.

At 1.22am on July 17 2009, Garda Leanne Conlon observed a silver Mazda car partially blocking a junction and when it moved away it almost collided with a vehicle which was coming behind it. Gardaí pursued the car where they observed it almost collide with a parked car on the left side of the road. The driver, Edvinis Dekas, Tirrane, Clogher, Ballina, stopped at Tallagh, Belmullet, and was arrested for drink driving. A blood sample provided showed a concentration of 239mg of alcohol per 100ml of blood.

The court heard that the defendant, who represented himself, has a previous conviction for drink driving.

The man who is a contract worker at the Corrib gas site, was convicted and fined €800 for drink driving, disqualified from driving for six years, and sentenced to 28 days in prison. For careless driving the judge convicted and fined him €500. Dekas, who had no insurance, was also convicted and fined €500 and disqualified for one year concurrent, and for failing to produce insurance he was convicted and fined €50.
