Hints and tips from Lorraine Hall from the Cleaning Corporation

To air musty cupboards and drawers:

Furniture often acquires an old, stale, smell especially when it’s not used for a while. Before you air it, it is worth checking out to see if there are any pinholes in the wood or small heaps of dust – these can be signs of woodworm. This needs to be treated chemically, so that the worm doesn’t spread throughout the house.

Crumple sufficient newspaper to fill the cupboards or drawers loosely. Leave slightly open for several days so that the paper and ink can absorb damp and odours, then remove. In fine weather furniture can also be left out to air, if possible. Pieces of dried lemon peel or a drop of vanilla essence can be used to keep the drawers smelling sweet. Lavender oil balls and blocks are also a more modern alternative and are usually available in your dry cleaners or hardware shop.
