Farney girls see off Mayo

Ladies GAA

Monaghan 0-17

Mayo 1-9

Mayo were unable to pick up their third win of the new season as they came unstuck at the hands of Monaghan in Emyvale on Sunday afternoon. The Ulster girls ran out five point winners on a scoreline of 0-17 to 1-9 in a hard fought encounter.

Mayo played with the aid of the breeze in the first half but trailed at the turnaround by two points, on a scoreline of 0-8 to 0-6. Cora Staunton was the star of the show for Mayo in the opening period with the Carnacon sharpshooter scoring five points for Mayo. Monaghan switched Yvonne Carroll onto Staunton after the turnaround to try to curb her influence on the game, but she still managed to end up with eight points over the course of the hour, with Mayo’s goal coming from Clodagh Martin. But it was not enough for Pat Costello’s side who were out fought by their hosts, with Ciara McAnespie in flying form in attack for Monaghan.

Mayo will look to get back on track this weekend when they make the long trip down south to take on Kerry in Listowel at 2pm on Sunday.
