Mellett calls for incentives for business to let public use toilets

Instead of Mayo County Council being asked to raise large amounts of finance to install public toilets and then have the added expense of regular maintenance and running costs, Fine Gael councillor Joe Mellett has suggested that these facilities could be provided in town centre premises at minimal costs to the council.

“There are numerous town centre properties in all our towns such as pubs and shops which could be adapted for large scale public use,” said Cllr Mellett, the Fine Gael whip in the council. “All Mayo County Council would be asked to do would be to grant an incentive to the owner such as a rates remission, and as an added incentive the owner would be able to charge the public a nominal sum to cover the costs involved.”

The Swinford based councillor went on to say that the proper provision of public toilets is a must for the tourist industry in the county and we need to try to make sure we have such facilities available, as there are on the continent, to ensure Mayo’s continued growth and promotion.
