Belmullet GAA club are confident their €1.8 million GAA development will be finished in time for The 2010 National Comórtas Peile na Gaeltachta finals which are scheduled to take place in the Mayo Gaeltacht capital on the June Bank Holiday weekend. The new state-of-the-art GAA facility on the outskirts of Belmullet town boasts two playing pitches, four dressing rooms, a club house, a covered stand, and parking facilities. Chairperson of Belmullet GAA club Sean Ó Gallachoir said he was delighted with the progress to date and that the project was on target and would be ready to host the National Comórtas finals from June 4-7.
“There has been a lot of hard work, fundraising, and meetings over the last few years to get the project to this stage but with the support of the entire community we are confident we will have one of the best GAA facilities in the country, not alone the county when it is completed this June,” Ó Gallachóir said. “We are very grateful to Roinn na Gaeltachta, Shell, and the entire Erris community for their support and encouragement. This is a community effort for the entire community.”
Padraig McIntyre of Cormac Technicians, project manager for the €1.8 million Belmullet GAA development, said: “This development is a major boost to the local community with 30 local people employed in the project. The new GAA facility in Belmullet will be a vital piece of infrastructure for the whole area for years to come.” The Mayo senior football team are scheduled to play Cavan on the new pitch in Belmullet on May 15 as a prelude to the hosting of the National Comórtas Peile na Gaeltachta finals at the start of June.
Chairman of Mayo Comórtas Peile na Gaeltachta Piaras Ó Raghallaigh visited the Belmullet GAA facility this week to assess the progress and discuss the hosting of the national Comórtas finals in Mayo this year. “Belmullet GAA club have put in a mammoth effort over the past year to have everything in order for the hosting of the National Comórtas Peile finals,” he said. |The Comórtas Peile is now recognised as one of the most important and prestigious GAA tournaments in the country and with TG4 and RTÉ Raidió na Gaeltachta broadcasting live from the venue it is a great opportunity for the entire area to showcase all that is good in north Mayo. The Comórtas is set to attract 10,000 people to the Erris region with some of the country's top inter-county players on show.” The Mayo GAA Comórtas Peile na Gaeltachta finals take place this coming weekend March 13 and 14 in Cill Chomáin GAA grounds with the winners in the junior and senior sections going forward to the national finals in Belmullet on the June Bank Holiday weekend.
