Sinn Fein councillor Rose Conway-Walsh is asking people to do as much of their shopping locally as they can.
“Retailers are really struggling to survive in the recession. We must make every effort to keep the jobs in local areas and we all have a part to play in ensuring that local businesses are supported,” she said.
“I fully understand people are trying to make what little money they have stretch as far as possible and have to make difficult choices.”
Cllr Conway-Walsh said the Government had failed to provide any practical help to small retail businesses so consumers have to do what they can to ensure they continue.
“In the main small retailers do not qualify for many of the enterprise grants. By the same token retailers have a responsibility to ensure they give value for money and staff are fully trained to meet the needs of customers. People need to know their custom is appreciated and they are getting good value for their money. Also retailers need to be proactive in letting customers know what they have on offer.”
According to Cllr Conway-Walsh it is local employers who are called on time and time again to sponsor local events and contribute to the community. She said they also provide employment for local people and through summer jobs have helped families to get their children through the education system.
“We must now remember that those employers are relying on us to get them through these difficult times. So whether it be buying a Communion outfit, household goods, or food, having a night out, or getting a haircut, we should support the businesses that have been good to us in the past.
“It will be too late when the shutters come down.”
