Young man undertakes to stay out of Ballinrobe following family fracas

A young man gave a sworn undertaking at Ballinrobe District Court last Friday that he would stay away from Ballinrobe following a fight between him and a family member.

Sergeant Helena Hastings outlined that on February 16 2010 at 1.20pm while in the Garda car, she observed in her rear view mirror a fight break out in Abbeyview, Ballinrobe. A young man was being held against a wall by family members and John Sweeney, 45 Carrowmore Drive, Knock, was trying to get at the juvenile.

Solicitor Aidan Crowley said that Sweeney, who has eight previous convictions and is currently in jail, got involved in the fracas as his brother’s lip was bitten. The 28-year-old, who is married with four children, was convicted and fined €300 by Judge Mary Devins for the public order charge.

James Ward, solicitor for the young person, who has no previous convictions, said that his client was in Ballinrobe visiting his parents-in-law and he got involved in the fight as he was taunted and threatened. Mr Ward said the young person was prepared to remain out of the town and the juvenile gave a sworn undertaking that he would remain out of Ballinrobe for at least a year. Judge Devins applied the Probation Act.
