Ballina man called gardaí ‘pigs’

A 31-year-old man who shouted abuse at gardaí was before Ballina District Court this week.

Garda Mark Kilbride outlined that Dean Cawley, 89 Barnadearg, St Patrick’s Estate, Ballina, was being threatening and abusive towards gardaí on Pearse Street, Ballina, on November 1 2009. The defendant was cursing at them and calling them “pigs”.

The defendant, who works for a local waste disposal company and who has no previous convictions, attempted to apologise for his actions the following day and also sent a letter of apology to gardaí.

Judge Mary Devins directed that he pay €150 to the Midwest Garda Special Needs Association.
