Free information events on Rural Development Programme (Leader) grants

A series of open information sessions on the Rural Development Programme (Leader ) will be held in southwest Mayo over the next few weeks by South West Mayo Development Company. The meetings are for community groups or individual enterprises intending to apply for a Rural Development Programme (Leader ) grant. Three community meetings will be held in Lecanvey, Roundfort, and Ballintubber, while two Enterprise events will be held in Westport and Claremorris.

“We are actively seeking suitable community and private projects to invest in and would encourage anyone involved in such projects to attend one of these meetings,” said Gerry O’Neill, CEO, SWMDC. “This is the second year of the current programme and South West Mayo Development Company have secured significant funds for eligible projects in our area.”

In 2009 more than €375,000 was paid out to a total of 13 community and enterprise projects in southwest Mayo. Examples of community projects which benefited are the community centres in Lecanvey and Roundfort, and the Ballyvary/Keelogues Development Company which was assisted in developing a ball wall, multi-use area, outdoor gym, and parking facilities. Private enterprise projects have included West Coast Adventures which was assisted in purchasing equipment for outdoor pursuits and All Star Stage School in Ballyheane which was helped with refurbishment and upgrade of equipment.

The meetings will take place in Roundfort Community Centre on Tuesday March 2 at 8pm, Ballintubber Community Centre on Wednesday March 3 at 8pm, the McWilliam Park Hotel on Tuesday March 9 at 3pm (Enterprise meeting ), and Hotel Westport on Wednesday March 10 at 5pm (Enterprise meeting ).
