An 18-year-old man who left the scene of a traffic accident, after his uninsured car collided into another car, was this week disqualified from driving by Judge Mary Devins.
At Wednesday’s sitting of Castlebar District Court it was outlined that on June 16 2009 at 2.30pm, gardaí responded to a road traffic collision in Snugboro, Castlebar where a car belonging to Ms Leonie Munnelly had been struck.
The driver had taken the registration plate of the car which had hit her and fled the scene, and gardaí tracked the car to Thomas Kelly, Tawnyculawee, Castlebar. Kelly had no insurance when driving and told the court that he panicked and drove off when the collision occurred.
The injured party, who was in court, said that she observed Kelly remove his registration plate and leave the scene.
Judge Devins convicted and fined the defendant €500 for failing to remain at the scene of the accident and disqualified him from driving for six months. For having no insurance he was convicted and fined €250 and disqualified for six months concurrent.
