IBEC has launched Gradlink, a programme to provide recent graduates with work experience opportunities in companies across the country.
Approximately 60,000 graduates completed their studies in 2009. While some of these graduates will return to education there will remain a significant number who will be seeking employment. More than 74,000 people under the age of 25 are currently unemployed, a great many have third-level qualifications.
IBEC director general Danny McCoy said: “The lack of work opportunities for recent graduates is a major concern. A significant number are now unemployed and unable to put into practice the skills they have developed throughout their years of training and education. Unfortunately many see emigration as the only way by which they will be able to get employment in their area of interest.
“While the economic challenges we face are huge, it is vital that we prepare for the recovery and ensure we retain our highly-skilled graduates. This programme is an attempt by business to address the unemployment crisis and provide our graduates with real opportunities. We are asking as many companies as possible to get involved in order to maximise the places available to graduates.”
The Department of Social and Family Affairs has agreed that participants on the nine month programme will remain eligible for social welfare benefits.
