Westport Golf Club

All junior golfers who are currently under instruction on Saturday mornings, are reminded that as next Saturday is the last day of this junior camp, membership forms for 2010 Junior Membership will be available from Jim Browne after practice. Junior members will have their own dedicated page on the club website from Monday March 1. In conjunction with the launch of this new page there will also be a Westport junior golf page on Facebook and Twitter.

There was a large attendance at the first introduction to Westport Golf Club’s meeting held at the club on Thursday . In excess of 15 potential new members were given an overview of what Westport Golf Club has to offer. The meeting was hosted by Liam Friel who complimented Marie Grimes and her marketing committee for initiating the new concept. Two further meetings are scheduled to take place on March 4 and 25.

Following the fifth round results in the ladies’ winter league, Nuala Hopkins will finish, at worst, in a playoff for the title. Maureen Keane will have to be victorious, hoping that Hopkins finishes outside the top three in order to prevent her from taking the title on Sunday. Ann Corcoran’s team was first passed the post on Sunday with a solid score of 44pts. This was only the second time the 40pt barrier has been broken in this season’s winter league.

The full and updated gents’ winter league table is currently available to view on the club website. The recent change in format has once again resulted in a very tight finish. The qualifying score for the playoff stages looks like it will be 185pts. Sean Kelly with 50pts and Willie Maxwell with 49pts were the respective winners in the penultimate weekend of the gents’ winter league.
