A man who was on his way to get chips and failed to stop at a Garda checkpoint, was this week disqualified from driving for three years after he was convicted at Belmullet District Court of drink driving.
On July 19 2009 at 12.45am, Aiden Munnelly, Mount Jubilee, Bangor Erris, failed to stop his van at a checkpoint being operated in the Belmullet area.
The defendant was pursued and stopped at Attycunnane, Belmullet, and later provided a breath sample which showed 92mg of alcohol per 100ml of breath. The van did not have tax displayed.
Samantha Geraghty, defending solicitor, said that her client was driving from Geesala to Belmullet to get chips and he only saw the gardaí standing on the road after he drove by them.
The unemployed man was convicted and fined €650 by Judge Mary Devins and disqualified from driving for three years. For the non display of tax, Munnelly was convicted and fined €50.
