Barrett supports skate park for Castlebar

An online petition with more than 40 signatures has called on Castlebar Town Council and Mayo County Council to provide a skate park for the young people of Castlebar. The organisers have pointed to the skate parks already in existence in other towns around the country. Councillor Harry Barrett has rowed in behind the campaign and is promising to bring the issue up at future town council meetings.

“All credit must be given to John Faherty who organised the campaign,” Cllr Barrett said. “He is very passionate about the benefits that will come from providing a proper skate park for the youth of the town. Not only will it benefit youngsters in terms of exercise, but also it will be an obvious added attraction to visitors who come here on holidays.

“My objective is to get the support of my councillor colleagues to put in place a plan that will not only look at the location and design of such a facility, but will also ring fence the money that will be needed to finance the park.

“I want to listen to John and others to see what exactly is involved, and in the meantime the campaign must be supported by every young person interested in this great idea. If the youth in Letterkenny and Loughrea can have a skate park, there is no reason why one should not be provided in Castlebar,” concluded Cllr Barrett
