RnaG urged to restore Sunday Mass broadcast

Fine Gael Community, Rural and Gaeltacht Affairs Spokesperson, Michael Ring TD, has said that people in Gaeltacht areas have been let down by Raidio na Gaeltachta’s decision to cut the weekly live broadcast of Sunday Mass in Irish and called on RTÉ to review the move.

“People in Gaeltacht areas and much further afield greatly valued the weekly broadcast of Aifreann as Gaeilge and I believe it is deeply regrettable that Raidio na Gaeltachta has reduced the broadcast to one Sunday a month,” Deputy Ring said.

“Those who are housebound due to illness, living in isolated areas, in hospitals or nursing homes particularly relied on this service, they miss it and they want it back. As licence payers they have a right to expect the public service broadcaster to reconsider this decision and I believe that RTÉ must examine the finances and see if the service can be restored,” he added.

“I will be hoping to raise this issue with the Minister responsible, Éamon Ó Cuív, during question time in the Dáil next week and I urge him to make the case of the listeners who depended on this broadcast and have been let down by the cut to the service.”
