Time waits for no man, as the saying goes, and that definitely rings true for Pat Costello. When Kevin Reidy informed the Mayo Ladies County Board the week before last that he would be resigning his post as manager of the Mayo ladies’ senior team it left the board in somewhat of a quandary. Last Thursday night the board met to quickly appoint a new manager and they appointed Pat Costello to the post.
Costello will be joined on his management team by Maggie Heneghan and Denise McDonnagh, both of whom made up part of Kevin Reidy’s backroom team. Costello was last year over the Mayo u-14 side and he will continue to combine the two roles this season. He has had little over a week to get his senior side ready for their first test of the season. The Mayo ladies will open their national league account for the season this Sunday when they travel to O’Moore Park, Portlaoise, to take on Laois and will follow it up with home games against Tyrone, Dublin and All-Ireland champions Cork, they will also travel away to Monaghan, Kerry, and Galway. Costello will be looking to follow up and surpass the work done by Reidy last year which saw Mayo claim the Connacht title and make the final of the national league and the semi final of the All-Ireland championship, where they were defeated both times by the eventual champions Cork
