Cocaine in Castlebar concerns superintendent

The superintendent of Castlebar Willie Keaveney told Castlebar District Court on Wednesday that the “influx of cocaine into Castlebar concerns me greatly”. The superintendent’s comments were made in relation to a case where a business student from Castlebar was found in possession of cocaine.

The case involving Conor McHale, Hawthorne Avenue, Lightford, Castlebar, was heard in October last year when Judge Mary Devins adjourned the matter to this week’s sitting for a probation report.

McHale told the court that he started using cannabis when he was aged between 17 and 18 and then moved on to using cocaine and ecstasy when he was 19 — but only used these drugs for special occasions. McHale said that he has since changed his life and is completing a business course in Sligo IT.

Judge Devins said that the probation report was favourable as were urine analysis reports which were furnished, and the judge directed that she would apply the Probation Act if €500 was given by McHale to the Haiti fund.
