Munnelly elected chairman of Mayo VEC

At last week’s meeting of County Mayo VEC, Fine Gael councillor Jarlath Munnelly was elected chairman. Cllr Munnelly, who comes from Killala, will hold the position for the next five years.

Cllr Munnelly, who was first elected to the VEC in 2005, said he hopes to lead a strong, united, committee for the next five years. He said there were challenges ahead in these uncertain times. He hoped that Mayo VEC could build on its good reputation. “There is not a person in this room who is not committed to what is best for Mayo VEC, and for education in Mayo. I hope that we can all work together for this,” he told members.

The Killala native is a product of Mayo VEC, and a past pupil of St Patrick’s College Lacken Cross. A qualified teacher, Cllr Munnelly has also taught in the VEC sector, and is currently employed as a regional development officer with Educate Together, the representative organisation of multi-denominational schools. Cllr Munnelly has also co-written research in the field of citizenship education, which he conducted during his time in the University of Limerick.
