Litter conviction for Ballina woman

A woman from Ballina who dumped rubbish in the Humbert Street car park in Ballina was convicted of illegal dumping at Ballina District Court on Tuesday.

Approximately 15 bags of rubbish were discovered in the car park next to the bottle bank on November 30 2009 by the litter warden of Ballina Town Council. A medicine bottle belonging to Maria McCreanor, 40 Millview Crescent, Ballina was discovered in one green bag.

Solicitor for the defendant, Denis Molloy, said that the single woman, who is in receipt of disability allowance, shares the cost of a litter bin with another woman, but on this occasion dumped two bags of rubbish in the location.

Judge Mary Devins said that McCreanor put “her needs above everyone else’s” in committing this “filthy and anti-social” act. The defendant was convicted and fined €250 and ordered to contribute €250 towards costs.
