Drink driving conviction for retired CIE worker

A 72-year-old man who was observed driving at night-time with no lights on, was before Ballina District Court this week for a drink driving charge.

John Finnerty, The Quay, Ballina was observed driving by gardaí at 12.25am on September 2 2009 in the Humbert Street area of Ballina with no lights on. When stopped, there was a smell of alcohol from Finnerty who admitted that he had consumed five or six pints. A subsequent blood analysis showed 254mg of alcohol per 100ml of blood.

The defendant, a retired CIE worker, and who is the sole driver in the house, was convicted and fined €300 and disqualified from driving for three years.
