Mayo artist to design sculpture for Mullingar

Ballintubber artist Cathal McCarthy has been picked to design the newest piece of public art for Mullingar, Co Westmeath.

The sculpture, which is to be unveiled in July, is entitled Stream Spire and will be installed at the Austin Friars Street gate to the town park and will stand at 3.2m high.

The installation will consist of a series of stainless steel spheres and is designed to mirror the nearby River Brosna.

The sculpture was picked as the outstanding favourite by a committee made up of local councillors and artists from across County Westmeath last month.

A total of 50 entries were submitted to Westmeath County Council last July which was narrowed to a shortlist of five in September, and these were put on public display.

This sculpture is funded by the Department of the Environment, Heritage, and Local Government’s Per Cent for Art scheme, whereby a percentage of a Government-funded job of work is set aside for an art project, and this piece was funded by the recent sewage works that went through Mullingar Park.
