The members of the Castlebar electoral area committee decided to bring their next meeting of the committee forward to as soon as possible once the council have been notified of their roads grants for the year from central government. Fianna Fáil Councillor Al McDonnell brought up the state of the roads since the cold snap, which has resulted in a large number of potholes around the area.
Independent Cllr Frank Durcan called for a meeting as soon as possible to discuss the roads. Director of services for the Castlebar area, Seamus Granahan, told the members: “We still haven’t received our notification for the roads grants for the area from the Department of the Environment, but as soon as we do, we will call a meeting with the councillors to go through the programme and give the councillors a chance to allocate their funds to the areas they want to.” Shane McDonnell, engineer for Mayo County Council, told the members that they will have to wait until the thaw sets in fully to see the full extent of the damage caused to the roads in the area.
