Ballina man jailed for drink driving

A man who has a chronic drink problem and has previous driving disqualifications was sentenced to three months in prison at Ballina District Court this week after he was convicted of drink driving.

On April 11 2009, Seamus McNulty, 35 Ridgepool Village, Ballina, was stopped driving by gardaí at Ridgepool Road, where he failed a roadside breath test. After the defendant was arrested he provided a blood sample which showed a concentration of 243mg of alcohol per 100ml of blood.

Peter Flynn, defending solicitor, said that McNulty has a heavy drink problem which has made him chronically ill.

The defendant, who was not in court, was sentenced by Judge Mary Devins to three months in prison, convicted and fined €1,000, and disqualified from driving for six years.
