There are major delays being experienced at Mayo General Hospital’s emergency department which has experienced an extremely busy week. On Wednesday morning the HSE said more than 20 patients required admission to the hospital while according to the Irish Nurses and Midwives Organisation there were 27 patients being treated on trolleys and 21 yesterday (Thursday ).
In addition, the hospital has been forced to accommodate patients in the Medical Assessment Unit, adding extra pressure on that unit. “Every effort is being made to identify beds for those patients who require admission,” a statement from the HSE said.
People who are attending the emergency department at Mayo General can expect delays, the HSE has warned. “We would encourage the public to visit the emergency department only in the case of real emergencies, and would also advise people to contact their GP or GP out-of-hours service in the first instance.”
According to the HSE some elective admissions are being deferred for the moment and this situation is being kept under review with the medical teams. Patients who are due for planned admission as an inpatient should contact the hospital before travelling. All emergencies will continue to be treated at the hospital’s emergency department.
“Mayo General Hospital regrets that any patient would have to spend longer in our emergency department than they would like,” the statement concluded.
