Rith 2010 coming to Mayo

Rith 2010, a relay run around Ireland to promote the Irish language, will be coming to county Mayo, on Tuesday March 16 2010. The Rith 2010 runners will travel through 100 kilometres in Mayo from Claremorris, Knock, Kiltimagh, Bohola, Bellavary, Turlough, and Castlebar, finishing up in Westport.

The run will start in Belfast on March 10 and the special baton will be passed among groups and people taking part for each kilometre of the course without stopping for seven full days. It will finish in Galway as part of the closing ceremony of the St Patrick’s Day Parade.

Brídín Ní Cheallaigh, Rith 2010 co-ordinator for Mayo, said: “We are delighted that Rith 2010 is coming to Mayo. It’s a great opportunity for Mayo people to give Rith 2010 a fantastic Mayo welcome and take part in all the events taking place during the festival. Not only that but local community groups, schools, and individuals will all have the opportunity to run with the special baton to publicise the work that they do in their own community by buying a kilometre through the website www.rith.ie Everybody is welcome to take part in the run and there will be a wide range of events running during the festival throughout towns and villages.”

All money collected from Rith 2010 will go into an Irish language fund which will help support groups which took part in Rith 2010 run Irish language events in the coming year.
