Gas price reduction good news for business and households - Calleary

Mayo Fianna Fáil TD and Minister for Labour Affairs Dara Calleary has welcomed the news that households and businesses in Ballina, Westport, Castlebar, and Ballinrobe are to benefit from a significant cut in their gas bills.

“Bord Gáis plans to reduce gas prices by eight per cent from February 2 for residential and small business customers,” Minister Calleary said.

“This further price reduction will come as good news for gas customers in Ballina, Westport, Castlebar, and Ballinrobe. It will make for a welcome saving at a time when money is tight for many households and many are feeling the pinch of wage cuts.

“As the third reduction in less than a year, this announcement continues a downward trend in the price of natural gas. In October 2009 there was a decrease of 9.8 per cent. In May 2009 the decrease was 12 per cent. This latest reduction means gas customers will have almost 30 per cent shaved off their gas bills from February of last year,” he explained.

“The savings small businesses can expect will also help to protect jobs. It’s important that we continue to see these reductions to help the business community in Mayo to become more competitive,” concluded Minister Calleary.
