More than €61,000 provided to community and voluntary schemes in Mayo

Fine Gael leader Dep Enda Kenny has welcomed the funding provided by the Department of Community, Rural, and Gaeltacht Affairs to Mayo during 2009. In total, €61,049 has been provided to 12 beneficiaries.

“This funding plays an important role in providing community supports throughout the county by voluntary organisations toward older people,” Deputy Kenny said. “The scheme provides grants to community and voluntary groups to encourage and assist them in improving the security of vulnerable older people in their own homes. This is vital in ensuring that older people can live independently in their own home as long as possible. The total amount of annual funding has decreased sharply from the 2007 figure through this scheme and while all of these projects are worthy benefactors, many organisations throughout Mayo are extremely disappointed to see funding reduced in this area.”

The beneficiaries were: Ballyhaunis Neighbourhood Watch (€5,162 ); Binghamstown Community Alert (€1,300 ); Bohola Community Alert (€400 ); Carracastle Community Alert (€4,155 ); Crossmolina Community Council Ltd (€26,892 ); Killasser Community Alert (€1,952 ); Kilmovee-Urlaur Community Alert (€3,395 ); Mulranny Day Centre Housing Ltd (€3,006 ); Roundfort Active Retirement Association (€3,240 ); Taugheen Community Alert Group (€3,990 ); SVDP St Colman's Conference (€4,381 ) and SVDP Westport (€3,173 ).
