Let’s go walking Mayo

The Irish Heart Foundation is urging the people of Mayo to get their hearts pumping by taking part in a World Heart Day walk in their area. All you have to do is step outside your front door and go walking on October 5 to give your heart a healthy boost.

The national charity for heart health, in association with Ecco shoes, is supporting almost 600 walks all over the country including five in Mayo, and over 15,000 people will be taking part in this nationwide event.

Regular walking reduces the risk of heart disease, high blood pressure and other health problems such as osteoporosis and cancer.

For health benefits, the foundation recommends walking at a hearty pace for at least 30 minutes or more on most days of the week. You’ll know you’re doing it right when you feel your heart beat a little faster, increase your breathing and raise a little sweat on your brow. You should be able to walk three kilometres in about 30 to 40 minutes depending on your pace.
