Mayo farmers are to receive over €20 million in funding under the 2008 Disadvantaged Areas Scheme, it was announced this week.
Mayo Fianna Fáil Senator and Government Spokesperson on Agriculture in Seanad Eireann, John Carty, has welcomed the announcement which was made by the Minister for Agriculture Fisheries and Food, Brendan Smith TD.
Senator Carty said the first payments were being made this week and the majority of eligible farmers could expect payment within a couple of days.
“This is a very significant injection of funding into the rural economy of County Mayo and I know will be warmly welcomed by hundreds of farming families who have experienced significant difficulties due to the recent wet weather.
“Minister Smith is continuing to build on Fianna Fáil’s strong tradition of investing in rural communities and defending the interests of our farmers,” he said.
Senator Carty also encouraged any farmers who might experience delays in receiving their payments to contact a special lo-call number which has been established by the Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food on 1890 200 114.
