Following a decade as Mayo’s premiere cinema destination, Mayo Movie World has undergone a major refurbishment. This upgrade will further both enhance the customer experience and maintain Mayo Movie World’s position as the number one movie destination in Mayo. Phase one was completed before the summer with the seating from the original first four screens replaced with stadium seating areas and new luxurious seats.
The second phase of this refurbishment, the installation of the digital projection and HD satellite feeds, were completed for the screening in digital 3D of James Cameron’s new film, Avatar. Mayo Movie World will be the first cinema in Mayo to have 3D HD capabilities.
Avatar will take you to a spectacular world beyond imagination, where a reluctant hero embarks on an epic adventure, ultimately fighting to save the alien world he has learned to call home. James Cameron, the Oscar-winning director of Titanic, first conceived the film 15 years ago, when the means to realise his vision did not, as yet, exist. Now, after four years of production, Avatar, a live action film with a new generation of special effects, delivers a fully immersive cinematic experience of a new kind, where the revolutionary technology invented to make the film disappears into the emotion of the characters and the sweep of the story.
Mayo Movie World expands the cultural horizon
As well as greatly improving the picture quality for customers, this digital projection will enable Mayo Movie World to offer to the public, digital 3D films, live in HD, opera, ballet, theatre, concerts, and sporting events on screen. Once again Mayo Movie World will be the first cinema in Mayo to stream live cultural content from stage to screen. This season commences with Charles Gounod’s opera Roméo et Juliette on Saturday, January 9 at 7pm. Stage director Bartlett Sher (winner of this year’s best director of a musical Tony Award for his revival of South Pacific on Broadway ) makes his European opera debut with this production. Rolando Villazón, one of the leading lyric tenors of our day who has been acclaimed for performances at leading theatres across the world, acts as Romeo. Young Georgian soprano Nino Machaizde performs as Juliette, she made her La Scala debut in 2006 as Najade in Ariadne auf Naxos. French-Canadian conductor Yannick Nézet-Séguin, who is music director designate of the Rotterdam Philharmonic Orchestra, conducts for the first time in Salzburg. The new look Mayo Movie World will play a major part in the entertainment of the people of Mayo and beyond for many years to come.
