Fianna Fáil Councillor Damien Ryan called this week for an urgent meeting of the councillors in the Ballinrobe area in relation to a number of assaults that have happened in the town.
Speaking at the December meeting of the electoral area committee Cllr Ryan said: “I’m urgently calling for a meeting of the members of this council to meet up with the gardaí to discuss the number of assaults that have happened in the town over recent times. The most recent happened last weekend where two men were assaulted and one man received, I believe to be, 25 stitches from it.”
Cllr Ryan was supported in his suggestion by fellow Ballinrobe based councillor Michael Burke. The Fine Gael councillor told the meeting: “I’d like to support Cllr Ryan’s motion, something has to be done to stop this kind of thing happening in our towns around the county.” Fellow Fine Gael councillor Patsy O’Brien also weighed in behind the idea telling the meeting: “A lot of these incidents are happening on Saturday nights, I’ve written to the superintendent myself in relation to this before and we did have extra manpower deployed on Saturday nights in the town, but that seems to have been reduced again and the number of incidents has risen since.”
