Magical music and poetry evening
A wonderful evening of music and poetry is on the cards when Mary McPartlan, Vincent Woods, and Garry Ó Briain perform at the Linenhall Arts Centre in Castlebar on Friday November 27 at 8pm.
Mary McPartlan is one of the most talented singers to come out of the Irish scene in recent years. Born in Drumkeerin, Co Leitrim, and now living in Galway, she started singing in the early seventies but it was not until 2003 that she decided to make music her full time career. Her debut album The Holland Handkerchief was released the following year to resounding critical acclaim and was collectively hailed as one of the finest traditional albums of the year.
Fellow Leitrim-born author, playwright, and broadcaster Vincent Woods has written songs for Mary’s acclaimed album Petticoat Loose. A former Mayo writer-in-residence, Vincent will be reading from his work during the evening.
Laudate ladies choir to perform
The Laudate Ladies Choir and special guest Ronan Egan bring their vocal talents to the Linenhall Arts Centre in Castlebar for a concert on Tuesday December 1 at 8pm.
Ronan Egan and Laudate present an intimate evening of song, featuring a programme of classical, sacred, and contemporary music directed by accomplished musical director Kathy Fahey and accompanied by renowned local musician John Flatley. Ronan Egan, originally from Wicklow and now living in Belcarra, will perform some favourite Italian pieces, as well as songs from musicals and popular Irish songs. Mayo’s Laudate Choir has been together for four years and has earned a growing reputation for beautiful singing and unusual interpretation of a wide repertoire of music.
Castlebar gospel choir makes a welcome return
Castlebar Gospel Choir makes a welcome return visit to the Linenhall Arts Centre in Castlebar with an inspirational and joyous evening of Christmas and spiritual music on Monday December 7 at 8pm.
With a wonderful array of musical talent and enthusiasm, it is easy to see why over the past 10 years the choir has won so many fans and admirers. For this concert, choir director Kathy Fahey has lined up a programme of new music especially for the Christmas season. Go along and get yourselves into a truly festive spirit!
New comedy at the Linenhall
Peadar de Burca brings his outrageous new comedy Why Men Marry to the Linenhall Arts Centre in Castlebar on Thursday December 10 at 8pm.
Brace yourself as Peadar de Burca’s new one-man comedy takes you on a mission to find out what goes on in the mind of the most complex species on the planet.
Irish comedian, actor, and playwright Peadar de Burca interviewed more than 300 men in Ireland and England trying to find out exactly what they wanted from life and love. Unfortunately, he found out. Following on from the sell-out successes of What Men Want and Why Men Cheat, Why Men Marry has continued with the tradition of rave reviews. Not for the bashful or the easily shocked, Why Men Marry is definitely not for men who can’t laugh… at themselves!
Sacred Heart foyer exhibition
Also continuing in the Linenhall Arts Centre foyer is a colourful and vibrant exhibition of paintings by a group of artists in long-term care at the Sacred Heart Hospital in Castlebar.
The exhibition is the latest in a series resulting from a groundbreaking scheme initiated by Mayo County Council in 1999 with artist Deirdre Walsh, an initiative now supported by the HSE. The project has enabled and empowered many long term residential service users over the years. The scheme is currently facilitated by artist Tom Meskell. The exhibition runs until Thursday November 26. The Linenhall Gallery is open to the general public Monday to Friday from 10am to 5pm; Saturday from 11am to 5.30pm. Admission to exhibitions is free.
