Council motion to restrict mammoth headstones — Deere

Fine Gael Castlebar town Councillor Ger Deere tabled a motion for debate at last night’s meeting of the authority (Thursday ). It proposed a new bye-law that governs the size and scale in respect of the erection of headstones in Castlebar’s new cemetery.

“This is an issue I encountered on the doorstep when canvassing in advance of the local government elections last June,” Cllr Deere said. “I believe that a restriction should be put in place in order to preserve the dignity and respect that is relevant for any graveyard. In any case, it is appropriate to have some form of guidelines that limit the development of oversized graveyard monuments that impact negatively upon surrounding graves.”
