Disqualification for man who drove with bald tyres

A 20-year-old welder who drove a car with three bald tyres was disqualified from driving for three months at this week’s sitting of Ballina District Court.

John McAndrew, Gurteens, Ballina, was stopped driving his car by Garda Fiona Reilly on April 18 this year at Deelcastle, Crossmolina at 12.30am.

The garda noticed that the two front and right rear tyres were excessively worn and the NCT certificate had expired in August 2008.

The vehicle was stopped a number of days later where Garda Reilly noticed that the tyres had been replaced.

Solicitor Neil McCole said that the car has since undergone two NCTs but has not yet passed and said that it is McAndrew’s intention that once the car passes he will sell it.

Judge Mary Devins convicted and fined the defendant, who has no previous road traffic convictions, a total of €150 for having three excessively worn tyres and imposed an ancillary driving disqualification of three months. For not having an NCT certificate McAndrew was convicted and fined €150. Recognisances were fixed.
